Where do millionaires keep their money if banks only insure $250 K?
Cash equivalents are financial instruments that are almost as liquid as cash and are popular investments for millionaires. Examples of cash equivalents are money market mutual funds, certificates of deposit, commercial paper and Treasury bills. Some millionaires keep their cash in Treasury bills.
Millionaires don't worry about FDIC insurance. Their money is held in their name and not the name of the custodial private bank. Other millionaires have safe deposit boxes full of cash denominated in many different currencies.
Millionaires can insure their money by depositing funds in FDIC-insured accounts, NCUA-insured accounts, through IntraFi Network Deposits, or through cash management accounts. They may also allocate some of their cash to low-risk investments, such as Treasury securities or government bonds.
Look for Depositor's Insurance Fund Coverage
Some banks offer additional deposit insurance through the Depositor's Insurance Fund (DIF), a private, industry-sponsored insurance fund. This coverage kicks in where the FDIC leaves off and includes all deposits plus interest without limits.
“J.P. Morgan Private Bank is the more elite program serving ultra-high-net-worth individuals,” Naghibi said. “It offers comprehensive services in savings, checking and retirement account management.
Where to safely keep cash at home. Just like any other piece of paper, cash can get lost, wet or burned. Consider buying a fireproof and waterproof safe for your home. It's also useful for storing other valuables in your home such as jewelry and important personal documents.
Ensure Your Bank Is Insured
If a bank or credit union collapses, each depositor is covered for up to $250,000. If your bank or credit union isn't FDIC- or NCUA-insured, however, you won't have that guarantee, so make sure your funds are at an institution covered by deposit insurance.
Although most adults have credit cards, millionaires are even more likely to use them. According to the Federal Reserve, almost all adults with incomes over $100,000 have a credit card in their name.
Rules for cash deposits in Savings Account
For deposits above ₹50,000, you need to furnish PAN card details. Suppose you make a maximum deposit in a Savings Account of ₹2 lakhs or more in a single transaction, in aggregate from a single person, or in a day. Under Section 269ST, a 100% penalty is applied.
Your money is safe at Capital One
The FDIC insures balances up to $250,000 held in various types of consumer and business deposit accounts.
Can you have millions in a bank account?
Generally, there's no checking account maximum amount you can have. There is, however, a limit on how much of your checking account balance is covered by the FDIC (typically $250,000 per depositor, per account ownership type, per financial institution), though some banks have programs with higher limits.
You shouldn't oversaturate your investment accounts either, as you'll still only get $250,000 in FDIC insurance per type of account. But you can have a retirement account, a single account, a joint account and other types and still get the $250,000 in FDIC insurance per type of account, even within the same bank.
The standard maximum deposit insurance amount is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category. The FDIC insures deposits that a person holds in one insured bank separately from any deposits that the person owns in another separately chartered insured bank.

Millionaires Don't Keep Much in Their Traditional Savings Accounts. “My millionaire clients keep very little of their net worth in a traditional savings account. $10,000 or less,” said Herman (Tommy) Thompson, Jr., CFP, ChSNC, ChFC, a certified financial planner with Innovative Financial Group.
The majority of Gates' financial assets are investments in corporations managed by Cascade Investments, LLC, an entity now partially run by Gates to purchase stakes in various businesses. He is assumed to have roughly $12 billion stored here, for future investments.
But rest assured: Kim Kardashian is doing just fine financially. Better than fine, actually. Reports this week claimed that Kardashian made $80 million off of her mobile game (spoiler alert: she probably didn't.) But she still has quite a bit of money in the bank, and she's clearly smart with her finances.
What makes up Musk's net worth. Musk lacks significant tranches of cash; his money is largely tied up in ownership stakes of his companies. To buy Twitter in 2022, he leveraged his large share in Tesla and solicited investors, rather than relying on liquid sums.
According to Schwab's 2023 Modern Wealth Survey, Americans perceive an average net worth of $2.2 million as wealthy. Knight Frank's research indicates that a net worth of $4.4 million is required to be in the top 1% in America, a figure much higher than in countries like Japan, the U.K. and Australia.
Can you put a billion dollars in a savings account? No. Most financial institutions would be dwarfed by the size of your deposit. They only make money by INVESTING your deposits, and earning a higher rate of interest than what they have to pay to you.
How much cash you should keep at home?
“We would recommend between $100 to $300 of cash in your wallet, but also having a reserve of $1,000 or so in a safe at home,” Anderson says. Depending on your spending habits, a couple hundred dollars may be more than enough for your daily expenses or not enough.
Certificate of deposit (CD)
Like a savings account, a certificate of deposit (CD) is often a safe place to keep your money. One big difference between a savings account and a CD is that a CD typically locks up your money for a set term. If you withdraw the cash early, you'll be charged a penalty.
It indicates an expandable section or menu, or sometimes previous / next navigation options. Your money is safe in a bank, even during an economic decline like a recession. Up to $250,000 per depositor, per account ownership category, is protected by the FDIC or NCUA at a federally insured financial institution.
If your bank fails, up to $250,000 of deposited money (per person, per account ownership type) is protected by the FDIC. When banks fail, the most common outcome is that another bank takes over the assets and your accounts are simply transferred over. If not, the FDIC will pay you out.
Warren Buffett has advised consumers to avoid credit card debt many times. With the exception of mortgages, Buffett is generally opposed to any kind of debt that requires the borrower to pay interest. Credit cards are a good deal for the banks that issue them, rather than for (most) consumers.
