Francis was born on September 7, 1949, in Fayetteville, NC and was the daughter of the late Leon and Vila Autry Calhoun. She was a graduate of Hope Mills High School, Greensboro College, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was married in Fayetteville, NC on July 19, 1970, to Donnie Ray Cole who preceded her in death in the year 2000.
