The P2188 and P2189 codes indicate that there’s an issue with the system running lean at either bank 1 or bank 2. P2188 indicates that the system is noting a problem at bank 1, while P2189 indicates an issue at bank 2. It’s important to note that the system will not set the P2188 and P2189 codes as soon as it notices an issue with the air/fuel mixture; when it notices the problem, it will try to inject more fuel. If the problem persists, it will then set the code.
More About the P2188 and P2189 Codes
Your vehicle needs a certain mixture of fuel and air to run appropriately, generally a mixture of 14.7:1 air to fuel. If the mixture leans too heavily on the fuel side or too heavily on the air side, you’ll have issues with the vehicle running appropriately. The mixture leaning too heavily on the fuel side is called “rich,” while the mixture leaning too heavily on the air side is called “lean.” These two codes indicate that the system is running “lean,” which means that there is too much air in the system and not enough fuel.
