Obituary for SeMonia Jean [ Redo ] Taylor at Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors, Inc. - Muskogee (2024)

Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She opened her mouth withwisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looked well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
Proverbs 31:25-27 KJV

SeMonia Jean was born on December 16, 1947 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Cornelius II and Flossie Redo. She was the fifth of six children. SeMonia graduated with honors from the historical Manual Training High School(MTHS) class of 1966. She was a member of the MTHS band, “Never duplicated, always imitated”, where she played the baritone horn. She matriculated to Langston University; however, transferred to Northeastern State University where she completed her Bachelor of education at Northeastern State University. During this time, she met and married Wilbert Roberson of Taft, Oklahoma. To this union, one daughter was born Shauntelle Janese. This marriage was dissolved. In 1978, Jean met and married Floyd S. Taylor who overwhelmed her heart with joy and love. He brought even more joy to her life by adopting Shauntelle prior to his death in March 1995.

She became the first African American educator at Harris Jobe Elementary as a 5th grade teacher. She pursued her passion for helping others by obtaining her Master of Education, majoring inreading which opened doors to long term relationships with her students and colleagues. Due to her passion for serving as an educator, she became a counselor at Alice Robertson Middle school where she retired from the Muskogee Education system after thirty-eight years. Even though she retired, she stayed heavily involved in the community. Jean was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Alpha Epsilon Omega Chapter for twenty-four years. She served as the publicity and event coordinator of the MTHS Alumni scholarship program where they have awarded over $35,000 to deserving students of color graduating from Muskogee High School. She was the only person to hold the office of treasurer for the MTHS reunion class of 1966, where she fully enjoyed every gathering. She loved her Manual Training school class of ’66. At these reunions, upon speaking, she always became extremely sentimental and always encouraged
everyone to the dance floor to do the “Electric Slide”.

She served the community as a lifelong member of Antioch Baptist Church in Muskogee,Oklahoma where she was baptized at a young age and developed her relationship with God until the passing of Reverend Benjamin Noble. She later became a member of Rayfield Baptist church,
under the pastorship of Reverend Leroy Walker Sr. and continued to flourish her relationship with God. Jean was passionate about her family and friends, always enjoying family gatherings. She was always willing to help whenever needed.
