Piazza di Spagna is one of Rome's busiest squares. This mesmerizing landmark and popular hangout spot takes its name from the Spanish Embassy (located in front of the imposing Column of the Immaculate Conception).
At the very center of the Spanish Steps is Bernini's Fontana della Barcaccia. The fountain, the first in the city powered with water from Rome's Aqua Virgo aqueduct, is shaped like the local "barcacce", traditional boats used for shipping wine. Century-old streets branch off the square, providing easy access to Via dei Condotti, the capital's main shopping artery, Via Frattina and Via del Babuino, packed with splendid 17th-century buildings.
