Departed: 01/09/2023 (Pipestone)

Obituary Preview: JOHNNY MULLER, 85, passed away from natural causes at the Riverview Healthcare Center in Flandreau, SD on January 9, 2023.

Born on July 25, 1937, to Johann “John” and Wilhelmina “Mimi” Muller at their home in Pipestone, MN, Johnny lived on the family farm until joining the Army in 1960. After serving with the Army until 1962, he joined the Army Reserves where he reached the rank of Sergeant by 1965. Johnny married Marlys Sue Greenhoff on October 8, 1966, and four children resulted from this union – Rex, Angie, Dallis, and Jennie. He wasn’t always the easiest to live with, but he would do anything to help his children succeed.

Johnny was an avid farmer who farmed full or part time his entire life. He raised cattle and hogs for over 40 years before “retiring” to help his friend Jerry Ellefson farm. He had many hobbies to keep himself busy as he taught himself how to do woodworking, carve Pipestone rock and even created beautiful iron sculptures that he displayed on his farm. His love of John Deere was well known, and he had a huge collection of toys and other memorabilia. He was especially proud to wear his John Deere clothes.

As he aged, his hobbies moved to reading, watching birds, and he wore the varnish off the dining room table from all the games of cards he played. Watching the birds, squirrels and traffic became favored pastimes after he entered the nursing home. He like to keep tabs on everything going on in his world.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mimi Muller, siblings, Louie and Tony, son Rex and granddaughter, Ava. He is survived by his children, Angie (Jason) Newby, Dallis Muller, Jennie (Robert) Plucker and three granddaughters, Madison, Valerie, and Eleanor, along with his sister-in-law Darlene Muller, many nephews and nieces, great-nephews and nieces, and great-great nephews and nieces.

Cory Hoekstra - October 30, 1969 - January 06, 2023

Departed: 01/06/2023 (Pipestone)

Obituary Preview: CORY ALLEN HOEKSTRA was born to Jerry and Karen (Duggan) Hoekstra on October 30, 1969 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was the favored middle child with two siblings (Perry Hoekstra and Nikki Hoekstra). The Hoekstra’s moved to Pipestone, Minnesota when Cory was four years old. Cory and his gang spent days catching crawdads in the creek behind the house or finding treasure at the adjacent junk yard. When he was 11, the family moved to “town” and activities changed to T-ball and BMX cycling. In high school, Cory loved wood shop class and working with his hands. Upon graduation, he enjoyed various positions in carpentry, construction, home construction, and trucking. He moved to Washington briefly to build his sister’s home and explore other parts of the country. In 2000, his daughter Halle was born, and had been the center of his life since. Cory worked for Musch Construction for the last 18 years doing anything Kevin needed to be done.

Cory has always been extremely generous with his time, talents, and was fiercely loyal to friends close to him. He was often helping friends and family to move snow, mow, fix vehicles, or even move across the country. He loved spending time at Dead Lake, MN for the Duggans’ Annual Blowout, which is a big family reunion with golfing, tubing, water volleyball, fishing, naps in the sun, and pinocle. In his spare time, he enjoyed billiards, Sunday golf with his Uncle Galen, snowmobiling, watching movies with Halle, riding his motorcycle, watching NASCAR (until Dale Earnhardt Jr. retired), and the History channel. People who loved him appreciated his stubbornness and crabby mites because they knew he was a big teddy bear but were always aware that even teddy bears have teeth and claws. He loved to dish out jokes (his famous “Is that a fat joke?”) and sarcasm to show his love along with a big hug (“Do you need a hug?”).

On Friday, January 6, 2023, while helping someone out (something he did best), Cory passed away unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack in York, Nebraska at the age of 53 years.

Cory’s life is celebrated and lovingly remembered by his daughter, Halle Hoekstra of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; mother, Karen Hoekstra of Pipestone; siblings, Perry (Heidi) Hoekstra of Lakeville, Minnesota and Nikki Hoekstra (Brian Bakke) of Anacortes, Washington; and numerous other friends. Obituary Preview: KATHLEEN DIANE MILLER, “KATHIE” was born in Hendricks, MN to Alfred James Erickson and Doris Margaret (Cornelson) Erickson on January 17th, 1945. She attended high school in Pipestone and furthered her education by earning her Associates Degree in Accounting at Minnesota West in 1994. Kathie was the second oldest of 8 children and spent time helping her mom with her younger siblings.

In 1962, she gave birth to a baby boy and made the difficult decision to place him with a wonderful family in Rock Rapids, IA. She often said this was the hardest thing she had ever done, but she knew he would have the best life possible. His adoptive parents, (Ralph and Angie Hagedon), kept in touch with Kathie and sent pictures to her of their son, Brian Clark Hagedon. She then moved to Minneapolis and worked for Pittsburgh Paint before moving to Mason City, IA. While living in Mason City, she met Wesley Heminger and they were married in August 1964. After 14 years, she and Wes divorced. In 1978, Kathie moved back to Pipestone, MN, and began working at Ralph’s Tavern, a business owned by her mother Doris “Wulf” Wollmuth. There, she met her soulmate. She was united in marriage to Kenneth “Joe” Miller on October 6th, 1979.

In October 1981, they suffered the loss of a daughter, Mindy Kathleen Miller, who was stillborn. In October 1982, they were blessed with a baby girl, Kelli Jo Miller. In March 1987, they again suffered the loss of another daughter, Kammy Jill Miller, also stillborn.

Kathie began working at Bayliner Marine in 1980 where she made many good friendships. Both she and Joe worked there for close to 15 years until she decided to go back to school to get an accounting degree from Minnesota West. She graduated with honors in 1994, and in 1995 began working for the Edgerton and later the Woodstock Grain elevators. She became employed by Hyde Oil, later called Growmark Lubricants until she retired in 2010.

In April 2013, she lost Joe to cancer. Soon after, she gifted the family home to her daughter, Kelli and moved directly next door. A house that was purchased by family friends and renovated for her so she could be close to Kelli. She was so thankful to be surrounded by her friends and family. Kathie continued to live at home until December 12th, 2022 when she fell at home and became a resident at the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone. She passed away on December 30th, 2022, at the Pipestone County Hospice House, very peacefully with her daughter and family by her side.

Kathie enjoyed camping and fishing at Lake Benton and made many long-lasting friendships with other camping families. She and Joe would take Kelli camping and often times another niece or friend. She was “Mom” to several of Kelli’s friends growing up, and always made everyone feel loved and welcome in her home. Kathie enjoyed crocheting and knitting, and was often making blankets, potholders, slippers and hats for everyone she knew. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and often told her daughter how the expert and challenger crosswords were a piece of cake. Kathie was the neighborhood “Grandma.” She was quick to hand out a sucker or a hug to any nearby kids and their friends.

JOSHUA JOHN HELLWINCKEL was born on January 3, 1985 to Robert and Lorilee (Arp) Hellwinckel in Pipestone, Minnesota. He was raised on the family farm north of Trosky, Minnesota. He spent his childhood on the farm where he started his lifelong love of tractors and motorcycles. In his younger years, he worked for his neighbor, Jeff Hunter, in the hog barns. He attended school in Pipestone where he graduated with the class of 2004. Following school, he began work at Bayliner where he was employed until the plant closed in 2009. In 2011, he began working as a technician at Titan Machinery in Pipestone. He lived on the family farm where he converted an outbuilding that he and his friends referred to as “the Shed”. It was complete with a custom bar that he built with his two good friends, the Krempges boys.

It didn’t matter who you were or what you did, he always treated people the same. He had a heart of gold and would give the shirt off his back for anyone – He was a big teddy bear! He loved helping people…that’s just the kind of person he was. He always had a smile on his face and loved to joke around. Josh loved people and could have a conversation with anyone, even people he didn’t know. He loved talking about the good ol’ days. He would watch old shows like “Andy Griffith” and “Laurel and Hardy” and could often be heard saying “man, I wish I had that old car/pickup.” He loved Chris Farley movies and would always impersonate him and recite his famous lines. He loved to have late night talks with friends on the phone and to stay up late with Ma, enjoyed torturing his dad and always stuck up for his little sister. Josh loved talking about music and singing old tunes, polkas, shaking dice, smoking cigars, and throwing parties, especially for the 4th of July and Superbowls. He sure loved his parties and doing all kinds of shenanigans! He loved going to the dive bars to hang with his friends…playing the jukebox constantly. He lived life to the fullest and loved to socialize! Every weekend he was out with friends and around people. He had his own shed/bar that he fixed up. He was so proud of it. When the bars would close, he would say “let’s all go to my bar for an after party, the night is young.” He partied all night and slept all day. Josh was a one-of-a-kind, his laugh and smile will be missed by many. He had all kinds of nicknames, ‘Scooty’ (because he was always scooting on down the road), ‘Little Joshy’, ‘Big Josh’ and ‘Hellie’. He loved his old tractors, vehicles and boats, he knew everything about them. Anything with a motor he would ride before a bike. In the summertime, you could find Josh riding his Harley Davidson or 1951 Chevy Belair - He loved his toys. He could never save any money, because he would find guns or vehicles he wanted. He collected toy tractors and beer signs.

Steve Blaue - December 24, 1953 - December 16, 2022

Departed: 12/16/2022 (Pipestone)

Obituary Preview: Steven LeRoy Blaue was born on December 24, 1953 to Robert “Bob” and Bonnie (Goyette) Blaue in Spencer, IA. Bob was stationed at an army base in Missouri and hitch hiked to Spencer to be there in time for Steve's birth. Steve was raised on the family farm near Royal, IA until age 15 when his family moved into Spencer. It was there in the saxophone section of the band he met Debbie Schlichtemeier and as they say, "the rest is history." Steve graduated from Spencer High School in 1972. After 1 year at Wayne State College in Wayne, NE he transferred to University of South Dakota (USD) in Vermillion, SD where he completed his undergraduate degrees in nursing and psychology on May 14, 1977. Steve and Debbie were married on June 29, 1974. They moved to Sioux Falls, SD on December 23, 1977. Steve worked as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit and Coronary Care Unit at Avera McKennan Hospital until he began his next step of becoming a CNRA at USD School of Medicine in Sioux Falls. He worked hard as a nurse and student, graduating on July 30, 1981. By then, son, Ryan and daughter, Stephanie, were born and with the adventure of a new career, he moved his family to Keokuk, IA in September of 1981. In October of 1984, their daughter, Nichole was born in Keokuk. Steve found the practice of anesthesia to be his hobby as well as his career and was totally dedicated to this specialty of medicine for the next 24 years. In December of 1986 they had the opportunity to move closer to their extended families in NW Iowa. So they moved to Pipestone, MN where he started his company, Anesthesia Services of Pipestone, and began providing care to 10 area hospitals. Central to Steve's life was his faith in Jesus, and belief in the power of prayer. He often prayed with his patients before surgery and offered a sympathetic ear.

Steve balanced his life as a sought-after medical professional with his family and home life. His children were the light of his life and despite his busy schedule he played a central role in their upbringing, volunteering as their baseball coach, teaching them to water ski and taking them on many family camping trips.

Steve was an active member in his community. He served on the Pipestone Airport Commission, was a member of Kiwanis, and taught ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) courses to other medical professionals. He was also very involved in his church, Christ the King Free Lutheran Church, volunteering as the youth director in the 80's. A highlight was taking the youth group to the annual Sonshine Festival in Wilmar, MN.

Steve always had a love of music and played his guitar with the local "Singing Doctors." They were a hit at the hospital Christmas party! He played bass and his 12 string guitars with the praise and worship band at Christ the King for many years, until MS interfered with that ability. Steve shared his love of guitar and piano with his children. Other hobbies included running, water skiing at Okoboji, he got his pilot license and enjoyed flying, camping with his family, and racquet ball. As a young man he helped his grandparents with their bait shop on Lake Minnewashta, a part of the Okoboji Iowa chain of lakes. Summers at Okoboji were a highlight to him. Steve was an avid MN Twins fan and cheered them on for many years.

As much as all these things were important to Steve, his walk of faith in Jesus Christ was most important. His steadfast beliefs in Jesus Christ, his life and ministry were paramount. He passed on this passion to his children and to many he encountered. He enjoyed Men's Bible Studies, hosting one of his church’s small groups, attending Promise Keepers, and led a group during the Walk to Emmaus.

In April of 1991 Steve was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He became a warrior in his fight to maintain his strength and health. He carried the burden of autoimmune disease with perseverance and bravery. In August 2005 he retired from anesthesia and broadened his scope of helping people. He became a student at Sioux Falls Seminary where he studied marriage and family counseling. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in May 2010. To that he added a drug and alcohol certification. Steve loved his work at New Life Treatment Center and then at Atlas for Life and his jail ministry. Steve was a chaplain for Pipestone County Hospice at the time of his death.

Steve's life is celebrated and lovingly remembered by his wife, Deb; children, Ryan (Rachel) Blaue of Pipestone, MN, Stephanie (Glenn) Conrad of Denver, CO and Nichole (Jason) Balt of Winter Garden, FL; grandchildren, Isaiah Thompson, Tarynn Blaue, Jaysin Blaue, Joshua Blaue, Iris Kuphal, Lazarus Kuphal, Sebastian Balt and Saylor Balt; sisters, Janalee (Charlie) Wakefield of New Brighton, MN and Nadine (Jerry) Peterson of Appleton, WI. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Bonnie Blaue.

Memorials may be directed to Pipestone County Hospice or to the family for college funds for grandchildren.

Eugene "Gene" Steffes - October 26, 1936 - December 14, 2022

Departed: 12/14/2022 (Pipestone)

Obituary Preview: EUGENE "GENE" ROLAND STEFFESwas born to William and Pauline (Krogman) Steffes on October 26, 1936 in Iona, MN. Gene began his schooling at St. Columba Catholic School and enjoyed watching the baseball games at the Iona ballfield. The family moved to Lake Wilson in the late 1940s when Gene’s father, a livestock buyer, purchased the livestock station. In Lake Wilson, Gene made many friends, enjoyed riding horses with Lake Wilson’s Saddle Club, and worked with his dad and brother Don at Steffes Livestock. Gene graduated from Lake Wilson High School in 1955 earning the honor of “Class Clown.”

That same year, Gene enlisted in the U.S. Navy and completed basic training in San Diego, CA. Gene absolutely loved the Navy calling them some of the “best years” of his life. He served as a Second Class Petty Officer working as a Disbursing (Payroll) Clerk and was honorably discharged in October 1959. Gene was stationed at Barber Point Naval Station in Hawaii and also in Guam. He traveled the South Pacific including the Philippines and Japan on his beloved oiler, the U.S.S. Guadalupe AO-32 which he described as “a floating gas station for the ‘big boys’ out there on the ocean.” When the ship was docked, Gene toured all over Hawaii and the South Pacific with his Navy buddies, riding horses, visiting temples, taking lots of meticulously labeled photographs, swimming in the Pacific Ocean, collecting sea shells, hiking through the jungle, and even hula dancing in grass skirts with his fellow shipmates. He loved his country and was incredibly grateful for his naval service and the opportunities it provided him.

Upon leaving the U.S. Navy, Gene accepted a job with Wilson & Co. and Armour & Co. as a Hog Buyer. He met Kay Priebe at the famous Hollyhock Ballroom in Hatfield, MN. They married on August, 7, 1961 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Slayton, MN. The newlyweds lived in Waverly, IA until Gene was able to transfer to a livestock station in Pipestone, MN where he lived out his life.

Pipestone was near and dear to Gene’s heart. All of his four children (Mark, Paulette, Mike, and Tom) were born and raised in Pipestone. Gene began as a Route Driver and Salesman at Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. of Pipestone in 1962. He drove the Pepsi truck and then the Pabst Blue Ribbon truck until 1983 when the beer distribution was purchased by Holinka Distributing in Fulda, MN. Gene and his family resided in Pipestone, but Gene commuted to Fulda early Monday mornings and returned home on Friday evenings. He loved his customers on his routes which covered territories from Brookings, SD to Fairmont, MN. Gene considered all of them friends and was known and liked by many as the “Beer Man.” He was a fiercely loyal employee and only Pepsi, Pabst, and Miller products were allowed in the Steffes’ household.

In 1998, Gene retired from route driving and sales. However, if you knew Gene, you know he couldn’t sit still. Gene’s lifelong desire to be productive and useful kept him from slowing down. So, in actuality, he ended up working over 50 hours per week at his post-retirement jobs. Those included Taxi Bus Driver at Pipestone County Transit; Stocker/Bagger at Hank’s Foods; Newspaper Carrier for Pipestone County Star/Free Star and the Worthington Daily Globe; and School Crossing Guard at the St. Leo’s Corner for Pipestone Area Schools. In 2015, Gene finally retired from his last job due to being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Gene was a proud member of the American Legion Post #6 in Pipestone, the Pipestone HRA Board, the Pipestone Senior Center, St. Leo’s Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus --- winning Knight of the Year in 2000. Gene gained friendship, happiness, and purpose through volunteering and serving others. In addition to formal volunteering, he was a devoted caregiver for his beloved brother Don for years. Some of his favorite activities at St Leo’s Church were ushering, serving as KC treasurer, washing dishes, serving at the Fish Fry, working the Fair Stand, and mowing the cemetery with his fellow Knights of Columbus. Other favorite volunteer activities included delivering Meals on Wheels to fellow seniors, assisting with the Avenues of Flags for the Legion, and helping every person he thought could use a helping hand. All of these jobs --- paid or volunteer --- brought him a great sense of fulfillment.

Gene was very proud of his family and worked hard to provide for them. Over the years, he enjoyed time with his wife and children while celebrating their successes. He loved Country Western music, horse riding, going for drives, drinking coffee, and walking – sometimes clicking 10,000 – 20,000 steps a day even into his last year of life. In contrast to his nickname “Mean Gene,” he was a kind, funny, generous, humble, grateful, people-loving, and genuinely happy person. He remained that way to the very last day, when he passed away at Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 18 days after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Gene is lovingly remembered by his four children: Mark (Lela) Steffes of Sioux Falls, SD, Paulette (Dave) Sarp of Edina, MN, Mike (Patricia) Steffes of Rochester, MN, and Tom (Erica Volkir) Steffes of Pipestone, MN; his five grandchildren, Elizabeth Steffes, Michael Sarp, Rebecca Steffes, Jason Sarp, and Briana Steffes; his sister-in-law, Janet DeGreeff; his four nieces and nephews and their families, Lisa (Dave) Cuperus, Randy (Becky) DeGreeff, Danny “Bubba” DeGreeff, and Stacy Kathman; his extended Steffes family in North Dakota; Lela Steffes’ four children Gage, Calisa, Torin, and Harley Squires; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Kay; parents William and Pauline; brother Donald Steffes; parents-in-law Darel and Emma Priebe; brother-in-law Arnold DeGreeff; nephew-in-law Dan Kathman; and many friends.

She then attended Mankato State College, graduating in 1963. She taught high school home economics for three years in Echo, Minnesota and one year in Ashland, Wisconsin. She married Charles “Chuck” Draper Aug. 12, 1967. They lived in Westhampton Beach, New York where Chuck, in the Air Force, was assigned to an Air Force base on Long Island. Lorraine worked as a substitute teacher.

Upon Chuck’s discharge in 1969, they returned to Minnesota where Chuck worked as news editor and later advertising director at the Windom newspaper. In 1975 they moved to Pipestone where Chuck worked as advertising representative for the Pipestone County Star.

On Jan. 1, 1976 Chuck became an owner of the Star and established Pipestone Publishing Co.

Lorraine worked part-time at the Star with proofreading and clerical duties until about 2020. She took over writing the Days Gone By column in the paper in 1976. This gave her an opportunity to peruse old newspapers and advance her interest in local history. She continued to write the popular column until a few months before her death.

Lorraine reflected a deep interest in local history and historic preservation. She became a “go-to source” for Pipestone historical information, particularly about businesses and historic buildings. She was a member of the Pipestone Historic Preservation Commission for about 15 years, Historic Pipestone Inc. since its beginning, and the Pipestone County Historical Society.

She directed the monthly HPI book sales, prepared the historic district guide “If Walls could Talk,” and prepared and delivered slide shows on the Historic District and Pipestone historic homes. Besides doing volunteer work for the historical society, she served on the Dollars For Scholars committee and was a board member of the Friends of the Library. She was active in Zion United Methodist Church until its closing. She was a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader in her early years.

Lorraine was an active reader and enjoyed exchanging mystery novels with friends. She was an avid photographer, particularly of plants and flowers. She produced an album of plant photographs at the Pipestone National Monument. She also had an extensive collection of dolls and bears. She enjoyed traveling and visiting historic homes and other sites.

Despite these interests, her greatest love was for her grandchildren. She enjoyed every moment with them and always had photos and stories to share.

She is survived by her husband and three sons and their families, as well as a brother. The sons and their families are Brian (Tamara) Draper and granddaughter Erin, Rochester, MN; John (Theresa) Draper and granddaughters Kaitlyn, Meredith, Addison and Ireland, Pipestone; Mike (Kelli) Draper and grandsons Owen and Will. Her brother, Alan Boysen, resides in Hills. She was preceded in death by her parents and step-father.
